I got a 1000Rs currency note from my friend which she withdraw from
an ATM. I went to shopping to purchase some medicines and after
purchasing I had to give the note to the biller for the payment. I was
shocked with the response the biller gave me. She told the 1000rs
currency note which I gave was a fake note. I had some knowledge on
identifying fake notes as per notice/instructions displayed in ATM’s. I
checked the note very closely and for me it looked like original note. I
again told to the biller to please cross check if this note is
original.
Immediately she opened a paper which had some series numbers of currency notes with denominations 500rs and 1000rs. She explained me that 1000rs note with series numbers 2AQ is a fake note as per the instructions issued from RBI and local banks. She also told me about other series numbers of the fake currency notes.
Well I was really surprised that I was holding a fake currency note. I did not know what to do with that note. Well just to confirm I went to an ATM near by and checked the notice board on how to identify the fake notes. Below is the summary to spot on.
“The best identifier is the silver bromide thread that runs vertically through the note. Most fake currency notes have either silver color painted as the thread or are hazy along that vertical. A real note has a prominent thread with raised ‘RBI’ markings made on it in English and Hindi. Also, in a real note, the color of the thread shifts from green to blue when viewed from different angles.
Watermarks of 500, 1000, Mahatma Gandhi, the Ashoka Pillar or the RBI that appear in the plain oval on the left side of a note are prominent with clear lines in an original note and may be distorted or hazy in a fake. Most notes will have a raised shape such as a circle and diamond to the left of the watermark. This can be felt by hand and is used by the visually impaired to identify the amount.”
After reading this instructions I again cross checked the note which I had but still it looked like original. Oh my god this was a serious issue. I did some research over net and found out that there are huge numbers of fake notes under circulation. Below is the series numbers which is said as fake. (Please read the disclaimer again…)
For 1000rs: 2AQ, 7AB, 7AC, 8AC, 9AB, 9AA 9BV, 2AU, 7DN, 7CN, 9AT
For 500rs: 0E P ,6AB ,6CW ,6BC,6AV,6AC,7CA,7DD ,8BP ,8BS ,8PQ ,8DC ,8BB 8DP, 8BF ,8CS ,8DD ,9BK ,9AN,9AR ,9PN ,9CN, 9OS
Well people we have to be careful next time we deal with 500rs and 1000rs notes. These notes can also come from ATM’s which is of main concern. We need to report to the bank immediately.
